Though lower than the dramatic mountains of the north, the Trossachs’ lush green uplands still dwarf the Lowland plain to the south. Gaelic for the high country, and including the Crianlarich and Ben Lawers mountain ranges, Breadalbane is where the Scottish Highlands truly begin. The Highlands folk hero Rob Roy MacGregor lived most of his life in the Breadalbane area, becoming a legend in his own lifetime when his fictional biography was published by Daniel Defoe - a story later embellished in Sir Walter Scott’s novel, Rob Roy, in the 19th century. Rob Roy, his wife and two sons are buried outside the now ruined 17th century Balquidder Kirk, which bears many interesting memorials to the MacLaren and MacGregor clans.
